School-Age Camp: A Canadian Expedition – Polymer Clay Doll Sculpt and Needle Felting AND Pre-School Camp: A Canadian Expedition to Find Polar Bears an

Mrs. Lisa recently wrapped up her "Canadian Expedition" Summer Camps for both Pre-School and School-Age children, and both were great successes! Each of the camps, which featured instruction in both felting techniques and polymer clay sculpting, intrigued young imaginations as a mystical wintry landscape was fabricated.

With the pre-school children, Mrs. Lisa demonstrated a wet felting technique for creating Polar Bears. Participants then were able to create tiny Inuit babies out of polymer clay to pair with their animal friends. But the fun did not end here! Next, the pre-schoolers did some ice-fishing and joined Mrs. Lisa in a giant "igloo" for story-time. And at the conclusion of the fun-filled day, Mrs. Lisa was happy to note that the children "loved it and were very proud of their work."

The school-age "Canadian Expedition" camp was also a great time for the children who participated. In this three-day series, the students also had the opportunity to create precious Inuit babies out of polymer clay. Under the guidance and expertise of Mrs. Lisa, participants gained valuable experience developing their fine-motor skills necessary for constructing these miniature sculpted creations. To showcase their works, Mrs. Lisa also taught a needle felting process for the children to create their very own igloos and baby seal pups to go along with the Inuit babies. "The participants really used their imaginations as they created a background scene and added many of their own needle felted accessories to their displays," enthused Mrs. Lisa. As a whole, the camps proved to be a great way to have fun and "cool off" in the hot summer weather.

Pre-School Camp: A Tale Of A Hawaiian Turtle - Making Clay Beads

What a blast!: first pre-school camp of the summer and it was a huge hit! Today's activity was beading---but we went far beyond stringing plastic beads on a plastic cord. The preschoolers got their creative juices flowing by sculpting their very own signature beads, pendants, and moulds out of multi-colored polymer clay. Each child explored his inner artist as we (the teachers!) guided the creative process. Along the way, the children learned neat tricks like rolling the clay out into an elongated "hotdog" shape---not only to warm the clay up and make it more pliable for sculpting, but also to create a unique marbling effect. They also explored the cool deep as they ventured underwater for inspiration from a beautifully illustrated children's story about a Hawaiian turtle. At the end of the day, each eager student departed with his very own original creation and a new thirst for the creative process!

Discover Winter's Tale Pop-Up For Preschoolers

I don't know about you, but I love pop-up books. Robert Sabuda, pop-up book creator, has delighted us with his rendition of 12 Days of Christmas, Peter Pan, The Chronicles of Narnia, Winter's Tale and many more. At SPLAT Studio, we are showcasing his book, Winter's Tale with the preschool Art of Reading Program.

The program is to inspire creative inquiry by developing visual literacy skills and experiencing a variety of art media. Following the story, the children are given the opportunity to work collaboratively with their parent, caregiver or SPLAT Studio teacher on a teacher directed art activity. Art activities are inspired by Robert's style, media and the theme of the picture book.

The Art of Reading is offered once a month with each month featuring a new illustrator. The December class is on Wednesday, December 16 from 10 - 11 a.m. or 6 - 7 p.m. for children ages 2-5.

At SPLAT Studio, we offer a Ladies' Night Out. Ladies' Night Out is on the 1st Sunday of the month from 5 - 7:30 p.m. There may be a few exceptions to this due to Holiday conflicts.

Classes offer unique art and craft opportunities to develop your artfulness. They are designed with the beginner in mind, however, all levels of ability are welcome.

Light snacks will be provided and you may bring a beverage of your choice.

Ladies' Night Out participants will be guided by SPLAT Studio instructors every step of the way.

Join us for the first Ladies' Night Out of the season!

Local Fiber Artist Lisa Haldeman will teach you how to create a one-of-a-kind 3-D felted pumpkin.

The basic techniques of needle felting will be taught. The first step will be to create the 3-dimensional wool pumpkin form. Next, instruction will be provided on how to layer the wool roving with warm seasonal colors to bring life to your pumpkin.

The finished result will make a plush accent that can be incorporated into a fall floral centerpiece, wreath or other home decor accent.

Lisa is the Artist behind "Lovinclaydolls". Her Dolls and Miniature Felted Pets have been purchased and loved by Collectors from all around the world as well as being featured in Contemporary Doll Collector and the online magazine, The Polymer Clay Daily. Her goal in teaching is to help others discover the joy and satisfaction that comes with creating something from their own hands.

What Is The Rule of Thirds?

Well, the Say Cheese kids can tell you. This is one of the many photography tools they learned last week in the Say Cheese Summer Art Camp.

The first day was all about learning tips and techniques. We spent the morning where I explained the tips and techniques and then I showed them my examples of pictures I have taken throughout the years. We then went outside and the kids used the techniques that I showed them and they took their own pictures using their own cameras or one that we provided. When we came back inside, we reviewed their photos and I explained how it was a great shot or how they could have improved it just by making a small change.

On the second day, we had a photo shoot. I sent a note home with the kids telling parents we were going to have a photo shoot and they may want to wear something special or bring some props along. Well, the kids must have been excited because they returned the next day with all kinds of props including a feather boa, a surfboard, American girl dolls, pirate costume and a crazy wig. The kids took turns where they were the photographer and then they were the subject.

Then on the third day, the kids made a photo album with their pictures. They also learned about Lazertran a water decal process, which they put on a CD case and also made an iron-on decal of their favorite picture and put it on a tote bag.

It was a great week. The kids learned a lot. It was very exciting when one boy came back the second day and his Dad said, "don't forget that 3rd rule". Also, one child told his Mom that she took a bad picture because something was coming out of his head. Then on the last day, parents were telling me that their children told them to pull over so they could take pictures of flowers. They are on their way to becoming great photographers.

The Success of Beautiful Baby Camp

Last week, SPLAT had its Beautiful Baby Camp, which was taught by local doll artist, Lisa Haldeman.

On Day One, they painted and wallpapered their Miniature Nursery Room Boxes, Wardrobe's and Rocking Horses and also made bassinets.

They returned on Day Two to sculpt miniature Baby Dolls out of Polymer Clay

And shopped for them in the tiny "Baby Boutique!" Everyone had a shopping list.

Day Three they Needle Felted little stuffed animals and rugs for the Babies and had a Tea Party with strawberry cupcakes!

The Girls also received a Certificate of Achievement Award

All the girls had a great time and learned a lot. The class went so well we are talking about having it again in the fall. Here are their finished room boxes with their "beautiful babies".

Fun-Filled Day at Historic Old Annville Day

Yesterday we went to Historic Old Annville Day. Old Annville Days is an annual day-long celebration of the history of Annville and this year they celebrated their 20th year.

A few weeks ago, I was looking online and saw they were having this event so I decided to call not thinking we would be able to participate this year. The lady was very excited about having us come and said they are still taking openings. We were excited too, but that meant we needed to plan quickly.

We decided that we were going to do a paper pulp project with the kids. This meant we needed to make the paper ahead of time. We recruited our kids in tearing all different colored scrap paper into 1 inch pieces. The papers were then blended combining water and then put in the refridgerator for safe storage.

Other preparations were taking student's projects from the studio including tie-dye t-shirts, clay projects, etc., and displaying them. Lisa Haldeman, one of our teachers, also displayed her dolls for her upcoming "beautiful baby" class.

It was a great day filled with seeing familiar faces and meeting new people, teaching the kids a new art project and building community awareness of SPLAT. We are already talking about next year. We can't wait!

Peace Man Art Camp

This week, SPLAT had its first Kid's Camp - "Peace Man". It was 3 fun-filled days with the children learning about block and screen printing. On the first day, the kids drew their family and then carved them onto a carving block. They used linoleum cutters for the carving. They also carved out a peace sign. They block printed by putting ink on a bench plate and then mixing the ink with a brayer. Then they put their images on a tote bag.

In the last day, the kids learned screen printing. Mrs. Meghan used the Yudu Screen Printing Machine by Provocraft. The children created a screen and then printed on their t-shirt. It was a great learning experience and Mrs. Meghan also shared with the kids about her experience working in the silk-screen industry.

Hope at Hand

On Saturday, May 9, SPLAT offered a program called Hope at Hand for anyone who has had a baby loss through miscarriage, stillbirth, abortion or in the first year of life. The ladies made a baby memorial sculpt in memory of their baby.

Bob Ross Comes Again to SPLAT Studio! - This Time It's Florals

Tuesday night SPLAT invited Patty Reichenbach to come back and teach a Bob Ross Floral Class. Every participant painted a 12 x 26 painting and had a great time of enjoying refreshments and each other's company while creating their own piece of art.

It was a great night and at the end everyone kept asking, "when is the next class?" Some of the highlights included "flicking", "I can't see my leaves" and "Everyone's painting is uniquely different".

Enjoy some pictures including a step-by-step floral.

For a great painting, you always have to start with good food.

Our First Auction Experience

We did something different today. We went to a restaurant auction. Our local Golden Corral has gone out of business and they were selling everything. It is amazing to see what a restaurant looks like when it is no longer in business.

Many items such as bowls, silverware, trays, cups, etc., were placed on the tables where we used to eat. The once filled hot food bars were now empty holes. Some of the highlights was an ice cream machine that my kids loved because they could make their own ice cream. It sold for $1,500.

We were looking at the aluminum rolling bakers racks to hold our bus boxes for SPLAT projects. They did sell, but we weren't the buyers. Another highlight was a potato peeler that sold for over $1,000 and a Diebold safe that sold for $900 with no combination or keys. The auctioneer was going to dismiss the item, but someone bid $5 and then it went on from there.

For us, it was all about the experience. Sitting there with all the people around us bidding on items as low as $5 and as high as $2,000. We came home empty-handed, but did something today we have never done before and had a lot of fun!

Bob Ross Painting Class held at SPLAT Studio

Yesterday was all about Bob Ross. SPLAT Studio invited Patty Reichenbach, a Bob Ross Instructor, to come and teach the students how to paint an ocean scene. It was an all day event filled with learning, socializing and fun. Patty will be back as there was great interest in her teaching a flower class.

Congratulations to the new Mommy! Or should I say the new Moms.

Tuesday night was our Doll Sculpting class with Lisa Haldeman and many babies were born. Alison Moyer was one of the students and she said, "that was a great class." Lisa is a local clay artist who sculpts one-of-a-kind dolls, bears and pets. She sells her work at local stores as well as online on eBay and Etsy.

The children were introduced to basic doll sculpting. Lisa guided them as they first made the head, then added the features such as the eyes, nose, mouth and pacifier. The children also shopped in the little doll boutique to pick out their babies hat and blanket. At the very end, they made a birth certificate for their newborn.

Alison also said, "Lisa is a good doll artist and very nice" and "the store was so cute".

Learn the Art of Paper Making

At SPLAT, we offer classes that encourage creativity and allow the children to learn a new art process where they can further the art either at home or with friends. One of the classes that we have had for Creative Kids and also a summer camp was Paper Making.

The children made cards and envelopes by recycling paper. In my research on paper making, I found Arnold Grummer, who is the premiere paper maker. He has taken his life working in the paper industry and has turned it into a business of teaching others to make paper.

The Art of Reading Preschool Class - It's All About Pottery In March

We are very excited this week as Rachael Coughlin, a local clay artist, will be teaching the preschool kids all about pottery.

Rachael will demonstrate wheel throwing techniques. There will also be several stations set up for the kids where they will learn how to make a bowl, a slab magnet and experiment with breaking clay.

The kids also started a bottle collage project. They took tissue paper and used mod podge to glue the paper on their bottles. Miss Meghan told the kids they could make this for a special present for their Mom or someone special. Shhh, don't tell anyone!

Doll Sculpting Basics with Lisa Haldeman

We are very excited as Clay Artist, Lisa Haldeman of Lovinclaydolls is going to be teaching a Doll Sculpting class for kids to make their own Miniature Bundle Baby.

The children will learn basic clay hand-building techniques to create their one-of-a-kind adorable bundle baby. They will also choose among a variety of cute fabrics when deciding if their baby is a boy or a girl.

Makin' Valentines!

For the past 2 weeks, the kids have been making Valentines for their friends at school. I asked Kendrik a few questions about making the Valentines. Here is what he said:

My name is Kendrik and I am 6 and in 1st grade. Miss Meghan first gave us a piece of cardboard and we made a design that we wanted to put on our Valentines. We cut red yarn and glued them on our piece of cardboard.

Then in the next class, Miss Meghan put paint on a bench plate and we rolled over the paint with a brayer and then rolled the paint over our yarn to make a stamp. Then I put the stamp on my paper and made my Valentine. Then we put our friend's names on our envelopes.

It is so much fun. I have taken many of Miss Meghan's classes.

The Ladies Are Tie-Dye'In - Part I

On Sunday, we had our Ladies Night Out Snowman/Valentine's Tie-Dye'In class. The ladies made their design by tying rubber bands on their shirts to make the pattern. Some of them did snowmen and others made hearts or their own design. After they soaked it for 20 minutes in the soda ash, they put the dye on their shirts. This process is called the "resist technique".

Here are the results from Part I. Next week, they will return for Part II where they will use fabric markers to decorate their shirts. We will post the final shirts next week.

10 Week Mixed Medium Class Continues...

We are in the 4th week of the Mixed Medium Class and it has been a lot of fun. Maggie, one of my students agreed to do a little interview. Here she is:

Hi, my name is Maggie and I am in Kindergarten. I will tell you the steps I did in making my paper mache portrait. First I blew up a balloon. Then I took strips of newspaper that Miss Meghan cut for me and pasted them on the balloon with glue. Then I wrinkled the paper up to make the nose and eyes. Tonight I painted my face tan and my hair brown. See the photos of the other kids and me making our heads.

Crazy About Mosaics by Ben Martin

Hi, my name is Ben and I took a Mosaic class at Splat Studio. It was Awesome!

Miss Meghan showed us what we were going to make. It was a mosaic tile. She gave us examples from the computer, but I had my own idea of how I wanted it to look.

She had containers with glass pieces in them for us to choose. I lined them in front of me so I could see each color. I thought of my design in my head and put them on the frame. I used her tools to cut the glass pieces so they were not all the same size. After I cut my pieces and designed them on the frame, I glued them into the frame. Then after I glued them, I put the grout mix on it. It was fun because I got to mix grout. I put the grout on the tile and let it sit for about 15 minutes.

After it was dry, I took a damp sponge and lightly went over the stones so they became bright. When I could see the stones, I chose the frame color brown and painted the frame. I let it sit for 24 hours and then I put a fastener on the back so I could hang it on my wall.

10 Week Mixed Medium Class Started

On Thursday, January 8, our Winter Mixed Medium Class started. It has been fun to start our 10 week classes again. We are beginning our class with a paper mache self-portrait and then we will explore other art mediums. The kids will be able to express their creativity in a variety of art projects over the 10 weeks.
